Adam made love to his wife Eve, and she became pregnant and gave birth to…

The First Mother – Created with Purpose
The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”
Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name.
So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals. But for Adam no suitable helper was found.
So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh.
Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
Genesis 2:22 (NIV)
The man said,
“This is now bone of my bones
and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called ‘woman,’
for she was taken out of man.”
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.
Genesis 2:18–25 (NIV)
Commentary
When God created woman, we weren’t an afterthought — we were created with purpose.
Think about it. Adam had land, a thriving career, and a literal paradise. But God looked at a perfect world and said it wasn’t complete without woman. And here’s the part I love: God didn’t ask Adam for input. He didn’t get feedback or approval. In fact, He put Adam to sleep. Then, while Adam rested, God created the woman. And when He was done, He brought her to him.
God didn’t present her as an afterthought or addition — He brought her forward with intentionality and purpose to complete His creation.
You were formed with purpose. Your presence in the world — and in your family — is not filler; it’s foundational.
As we honor Mother’s Day, take heart: even in a perfect creation, God said it wasn’t finished until you were here. Whether you’re mothering through birth, through love, through grief, or through hope — you are part of the plan, and you matter.
Happy Mother’s Day to you — may you feel seen, honored, and deeply loved.
ME Notes
- You were created with intentionality, not as a correction — but as a completion.
- The role of “helper” (Hebrew ezer) is not a lesser one; it is used of God Himself as deliverer and strength.
- God formed her apart from man’s instruction — and fully in alignment with His own design.
Through Our Lens
Our presence as mothers — and as women — isn’t extra. It’s essential.
In our communities, motherhood is often layered with weight, responsibility, and legacy. We have been expected to carry the weight of the world while, at times, being made to feel like an optional part of it.
But before you carried anyone else, you were carried in the heart of God.
Your identity as mother doesn’t begin with what you do or how others define you — it begins with how you were made.
Prayer
God of wisdom and design, thank You for creating mothers with intention and grace.
Let each woman who reads this feel her worth — not just in what she gives, but in who she is.
On this Mother’s Day, surround her with reminders of Your delight and care. Amen.
Reflections
- Where in your story can you trace the fingerprints of God’s intention?
- What does it mean to you that God created woman before any children were born — as part of His vision for wholeness?
- How do you show up as woman while also being mother?
- What would change in your motherhood if you truly believed you were created on purpose — not as a reaction, but as part of God’s original vision?
